May progress, a step up in volume

My May Zone 2 project metrics show a step change in volume. You can find the details of my training plan here, my goals and metrics here.

  • My total cycling volume was at 1,248 Km’s more than double than in April. I did a 400km event in May and like the long distance events in previous months, I found I needed quite some time recover, at least 4 to 5 days.
  • I did less zone 2 sessions than I have previously, this is mainly due to spending much more time cycling outside. That said my Zone 2 has improved slightly, this time as I’ve pushed the power up while keeping my heart rate within the zone.
  • My VO2Max dropped from the 50 achieved in April, but maintained at 48 throughout the month. I haven’t been doing as many high intensity sessions as planned. I’ve replaced these with running in some cases. The estimate is based on the Garmin estimate, so not scientific. I do need to be more consistent in doing high intensity sessions each week. This should be a focus for June.
  • Strength training dropped off in May. Weight training like high intensity sessions is getting dropped in favour of more volume on the bike as I increase my mileage and hours.
  • My weight was maintained at around 94 Kg. I plan on doing a DEXA scan in June to get an accurate view on where I am.

May was a big increase in volume, which is expected to continue through June. Vo2Max and strength has remained consistent, due to me not giving them the focus I should. Despite the shortfalls, I’m please that I’ve ramped up the volume as I have a big 600 km ride in June, this will be my biggest ride this year apart from the main ride in August
