June progress, improved aerobic capacity and fat oxidation

My June Zone 2 project metrics show continued high volume with an almost exclusive focus on low intensity work. My Vo2Max hasn’t improved but my fat oxidation seems to have improved a lot. You can find details on my latest Vo2Max test and DEXA scan here. You can also find more information on training plan here, and my goals and metrics here.

  • My total cycling volume was at 1,049 Km’s, a decrease from May, but was an increase in average weekly volume.. I did a 600km event in June, quite a step up from May. Like the long distance events in previous months, I found I needed quite some time recover, a week in this case. In fact a large part of June was resting before and after that event.
  • Almost all my sessions we low intensity/Zone 2. This gave me a further increase in aerobic capacity.
  • My VO2Max dropped down to 45, measured in a lab test. Although the Garmin measurement maintained at 48. I didn’t do hardly any high intensity sessions which started to show. This is something I’ll need to work on in future.
  • Strength training was also less focused in June. Weight training like high intensity sessions is getting dropped in favour of more volume on the bike plus rest and recovery. Not ideal.
  • My weight was maintained at around 94 Kg. I have improved my body fat and bone density a little. As seen in the DEXA scan here.

June maintained volume, but I had lots of rest periods. July will see a decrease in volume as I start to taper for the 1200km ride in August. Despite the reduction in Vo2Max and lack of strength training I’m pleased that I completed the 600km ride and have improved aerobic capacity and fat oxidation ahead of the big event in August. In July I need to make sure I maintain this as I taper.
